Road to Pai

The road to Pai is supposed to be one of the most dangerous in the world.  So why not learn how to ride a manual motorbike (uses gears and clutch) and drive it?

Tim gave me a 10 minute lesson on the motorbike and then we loaded up and headed out on the three hour ride to Pai.  I figured, after doing the Ha Giang Loop, this couldn't be worse.  In reality, lots of people drive this road every day, but I think most of them are idiots so they get hurt lol

I love this group:  Tim from Nebraska, Kevin from Australia, Derrik from Iowa

Such a goofball

I drive slower than everyone else but the guys were patient.

Police stops are common here and they require you to have an international drivers license, which I don't have.  The first checkpoint we come to... 20 minutes after I learned to drive.... I stalled out in the middle of the road in front of the cops.  Whoops.  We were fine though, they didn't stop any of us.

I found information about a nice side road to take instead of the main road.  So we did that rte 3009.  It was beautiful and back country.  We stopped at a hole in the wall for lunch and I had Koa Soi.  Delish!  The guys were pretty happy with my choice and the locals enjoyed staring at all of us white people.

Place we ate

Took a detour to an amazing waterfall also.

Getting back on the road

Stopped a bit later and the guys booked us a hostel while I rested.  They all have cell phones that work here, I don't.

Pai:  It's a cute town full of lots of white people haha and mainly young people looking to party.  There are inexperienced scooter drivers everywhere.  Scares me more than driving the main road with crazy Thai drivers.

Curry of some sort

We made it!  And I didn't die!  lol

They set up a street each night for a night market.  The food is Amazing.

This guy was playing traditional Thai music for tips.  Until the guys tipped him and we realised he wasn't actually playing anything.  haha

Met people and went out drinking all night.  It was a blast.
